PR and Communications Training – 17 May 2019 (Glasgow)

The media industry remains in a state of constant flux. Traditional news media is changing and the way we consume news has been transformed thanks to social media. Accusations of ‘fake news’ and lack of trust abound. The importance of communicating your message to your audiences in the right way, at the right time and through the right channels has never been more important – and the skills to do it never more in demand. This one-day introductory course will give you a solid grounding in how PR and Communications is reacting to the changes in the media landscape – and how you can create, shape and manage your messaging in the most effective way.

Whether you have no experience in Communications or have – or already work – in a public relations role, this course will help you to hone the skills necessary to ensure your organisation’s mission and message are at the forefront of any media. You will also understand the emotional drivers associated with communications, the changing media landscape and how you can take advantage of it. You will learn how to target your communications, ensuring they best fit the media you need to reach your audience – and how to get your people for interviews. You will also gain a better understanding of the importance of social media and how it is changing the Comms landscape and how integrated campaigns and digital assets are impacting a new canvas for creative and direct communications. What’s more, you will understand how to drive public debate and get a flavour of what – and what not to do – during a reputational crisis.

Your tutor for the day is an award-winning journalist and scriptwriter, who has led the PR and Communications team at Glasgow Life since 2007. During that time, James Doherty has helped to successfully communicate everything from the opening of the Riverside Museum and the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, to major events such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2018 European Championships. He’s also helped manage the odd reputational crisis or two. Glasgow Life operates from 171 venues and sites, with almost 3,000 staff and volunteers across the city’s cultural, arts, music, sport, communities and libraries and events estates.

Feature writing & pitching – 1 May 2019 (Glasgow)

Print journalism is said to be a dying industry and has been counted out repeatedly over the years. But it remains the main medium in which the world is examined in depth and where people are able to understand the context of events and not just hear the facts.

Feature writing is the art form of print journalism, using story telling and the techniques of fiction to reach people both emotionally and intellectually. So if you’re interested in great writing and interested in people, this one day course is for you. 

Given by a prize winning tutor who has won awards for feature writing, medical journalism, comment and travel writing and also been shortlisted for prestigious fiction awards, it looks at the core skills of writing, research, ideas, and interviewing. You will also learn how to navigate the difficult world of selling your ideas and how to pitch to editors.

Audio recording and editing for journalists – 30 April 2019 (Glasgow)

Podcast listener figures have almost doubled in five years, proving the demand for the spoken word. Some of the most popular podcasts take the form of an interview – something many journalists already have extensive experience of – with one key difference being the higher recording quality.

This one-day course will offer journalists a jargon-free introduction to the equipment, software and skills required to make pro-level interview recordings. It will appeal to those looking to make and publish audio material, offer this service to their employer or freelance clients, or to anyone looking to improve the quality of their interview recordings for their own records.

TV Interviewing skills for journalists – 11 December 2018 – Glasgow

We have a limited number of free places available on our TV Interviewing skills for journalists course running in Glasgow on 11 December.  This course will help journalists to develop their existing journalistic skills for television broadcasting. Television interviewing techniques will be covered with the focus of the session on increasing the range of expertise. If you feel your self-confidence, body language and voice might let you down then this practical workshop is for you.

Free GDPR Training for freelance Journalists and Photographers in Scotland

Data Protection and the GDPR

You may be aware that from the 25th May the GDPR has been enforced with the possibility of huge financial penalties. You may not be aware that on the 24th May the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA) was given Royal Assent.

While the GDPR sets the general rules for data protection the DPA is complementary to it and spells out many of the exemptions and exceptions, in particular for journalism.

NUJ are pleased to be able to offer free training sessions for members in Scotland to help you get to grips with this new data protection regime and its implications for journalism. It will include considerations of data sharing, consent, information security, data subject rights and issues relating to photography

The sessions will take place on the following dates:

WRITING FOR THE WEB – GLASGOW – 24 JUNE 2016

We still have places available on our Writing for the Web course running next week in Glasgow.

What’s different about Writing for the Web? Who are you writing for? Understanding your audience.  Getting the readers’ attention. Finding the right tone of voice.  Writing for the way they read.  The why and how of short copy. Structuring content for the web.

The course will provide the opportunity for stimulating discussions about the latest issues associated with developing professional journalistic skills across a variety digital media sectors.  Interactive and practical, it is for print journalists who now need to write clear, compelling content for websites.  Course will look at techniques that will help key audiences find and engage with content once they are there.

Programme

  • Currency – Topics which are current are good news. Consumers are used to receiving the latest updates, and there is so much news about that old news is quickly discarded. A story with only average interest needs to be told quickly if it is to be told at all. How to use the social nedia tools to up the interest and provide fresh content. To be able to summarise complicated topics in an informative and concise way.
  • Headline writing – To attract the eye a good headline must have clarity (convey to the reader what the sub intends without confusion or ambiguity) and impact (strong enough effect to persuade the reader to read on)
  • Importance of Basic Skills in Journalism and in using digital and social media technology – The most important skills for any journalists is the ability to explain complex issues such as economic ones and put them into everyday language in an intersting way that readers can understand. The importance of mastering the basics with phones, iPad’s, Facebook and Twitter. Check twice send once or regret forever it might be said when dealing with social networks –  how to avoid some of the main pitfalls.
  • Why Evergreen Content is Valuable? – A well written piece of content that does an excellent job at answering a question can satisfy people over a long period of time. Since evergreen content is enduring and capable of receiving traffic for many years from search engines, directories and other collections of useful links it can be extremely valuable.
  • Technology talks! – Difference between reporting for print and online websites. How hi-tech gadgets such as the iPad edition allows for increased interactivity with the reader.
  • Who pays the piper? – The difference between writing for the reader and writing for the pay per click advertiser
  • Linking – Considering how to link stories from across the globe to local issues using RSS feeds,social media sites.
  • Freelancing abroad – The challenges ofworking in a hostile digital media environment geographically and politically.
  • Writing articles with SEO – Search engine optimisation or SEO can be an important aid to drive traffic to your website or news blog. Considering the use of standard tools such as Google analytics and tag words to move an article or search item up the rankings.What’sdifferent about Writing for the Web?
